We’re very excited to welcome Mark Lockheart’s Shapeshifter Trio to Highams Park Jazz Club for the very first time. The trio features Mark Lockheart on saxophones and clarinets, Huw V Williams on bass, and Jay Davis on drums and percussion. Shapeshifter is a bold new project that brings together three of the UK’s most creative voices, creating a constantly evolving sound that blends jazz, rock, classical, and free improvisation.
Mark Lockheart is one of Britain’s most distinctive saxophonists and composers. He first made his mark with the influential big band Loose Tubes, went on to co-lead the eclectic Perfect Houseplants, and played with the Mercury Prize–nominated ensemble Polar Bear. Over the years, he has collaborated with an incredible range of artists, including Django Bates, Kenny Wheeler, Laura Jurd, Elliot Galvin, and even Radiohead. His projects, including In Deep and Ellington in Anticipation, have been widely praised, and as an award-winning educator, he has mentored many of today’s rising jazz stars.
Bassist Huw V Williams is known for his rich tone and versatile approach, having worked with artists like Laura Jurd, Ivo Neame, and Gruff Rhys. Drummer Jay Davis studied at the Royal Academy of Music, leads his own ensemble Bad Trad, and has performed with a wide range of groups, bringing energy, nuance, and imagination to every performance. Together, the trio shares writing duties while also performing selected works by Bill Frisell, Joe Henderson, and Paul Motian. Their music moves seamlessly from delicate, atmospheric passages to driving grooves and dramatic musical shifts, exploring textures and ideas in the moment.
All three are central figures on the UK music scene and have performed with luminaries including Dave Holland, Django Bates, Jim Black, Kenny Wheeler, Norma Winstone, Laura Jurd, Rob Luft, Elliot Galvin, Polar Bear, Perfect Houseplants, and more. Shapeshifter is about spontaneity, shared intuition, and the thrill of discovery, so expect a night full of surprises and unforgettable moments.

Buses and trains:
We are a four-minute walk from Highams Park overground station, which is on the Liverpool Street to Chingford line. We are also two overground stops from Walthamstow Central underground station at the end of the Victoria line. Alternatively, the 275, 212 & W16 bus routes will bring you within a short walk of All Saints church. If you are coming by car, there is plenty of free available parking and no restrictions after 6 p.m. on single yellow line from Monday to Saturday, and all day on Sunday.
